MARS Associates Volunteers
We are proud of MARS Associates and the people it represents. Many of our members are involved as volunteers in worthwhile activities across our communities. Every quarter, we recognize and encourage this spirit of volunteerism, by highlighting a group or organization and the MARS members who volunteer there. In addition, MARS members volunteer to support activities at our parent companies and to prepare the quarterly MARS STAR mailing and maintain the website. If you would like to volunteer for one or more of these activities, or if you have information about an organization at which MARS members volunteer, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Judy Nielsen 303-905-3957.
We would love to recognize your volunteer activities and organizations, and thereby provide information to other members who are also interested in volunteering! Please tell us about it!
Volunteer Opportunities
AARP Tax-Aide
This organization provides Free Tax Preparation Services to low-to-moderate income taxpayers from late January/early February to April 15th each year.
You will receive training and continuing support in a welcoming environment. As our current volunteers tell us, you’ll not only learn new skills, but also get a great feeling from helping someone else. Training materials and computers are provided by AARP and the IRS.
Most volunteers serve one day a week for 4-6 hours. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Dave Martz 303-229-1331 or Kathy Martz 303-229-2028. For more information, see the MARS STAR (Oct. 2018) article.
Denver Museum of Nature and Science
There are MANY opportunities to volunteer with the DMNS. There are currently nearly 1800 volunteers that provided 225,000 hours of service in 2017. Among these were several dozen Lockheed Martin volunteers, supporting disciplines such as:
- Prehistoric Journey – introducing guests to creatures of the distant past
- Expedition Health – showing how our bodies work and develop as we age
- Ambassadors – showing guests how to navigate their way to exhibits and facilities
- Space Odyssey – highlighting the wonders of astronomy, space travel/exploration
- Research and Collection – involves specimen conservation, education, zoology, etc.
- Temporary Exhibits — The newest upcoming exhibit will feature Leonardo da Vinci, but past exhibits have included Body Worlds, Titanic, Engineer-It, Sherlock Holmes, the weather. In other words, there is a wide variety of topics that will expand your horizons.
No experience? No problem – the key is INTEREST – and training is provided. There are two shifts/day – 8:30 to 1:00 and 12:30 to 5:00. Some volunteers work every week, some work bi-weekly. There is a flexible “Ready on Arrival” option that allows you to select your shifts from a pre-determined list of Museum needs. Some volunteers even work from home! Need more encouragement? There are annual Volunteer Appreciation events with free food. Finally, volunteers also receive benefits that include free or discounted access to exhibitis, educational programs, and lectures. Come join us! It’s FUN!
For more information, see the MARS STAR (Jan 2019) article. Also, checkout the DMNS website or contact TBD.
